ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Paul Police are investigating a second deadly officer-involved shooting in less than 24 hours.
The latest incident left one officer wounded and the suspect dead.
At a briefing early Wednesday, Police Chief Thomas Smith said the suspect opened fire as the officers drove into the lot, hitting their squad and one of the officers. Smith says the officers returned fire and struck suspect, who died at the scene. The chief says the officer is in stable condition and is expected to undergo surgery Wednesday.
It happened as the officers pulled into a parking lot at 720 Payne Avenue near Minnehaha Avenue shortly after 11 p.m. on Tuesday.
The officer hit by the gun fire during the incident was taken to Regions Hospital where he is said to be in stable condition.
Names of the officer wounded and the suspect have not been released yet.
The shooting happened just hours after another officer-involved shooting in St. Paul that left one suspect dead. Officers shot and killed a man during a traffic stop after Minneapolis police asked for help in a drug investigation on Tuesday afternoon. That incident happened on Jessamine Avenue East and Westminster Street.
