HUGO, Minn. - A Hugo artist's painting will be featured on
the Minnesota 2013 walleye stamp, according to the Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources.
Nicolas Markell's painting of a walleye chasing a minnow was
chosen from among nine entries to win the DNR-sponsored stamp contest. This is the second win in a row for Markell
who won the trout stamp contest last year.
In fact, Markell has been a finalist many times, finishing third in the
2012 walleye and turkey stamp contests.
Winning artists receive no compensation from the DNR, but do retain reproduction and marketing rights.
The Legislature created the walleye stamp in 2009, and uses
revenue from the stamp sales to purchase walleyes to be stocked in Minnesota
lakes.
The 2012 walleye stamp is still
available for purchase at all license vendors.
