Jonesboro, AR (Sports Network) - A three-pointer by Ed Townsel with under
three seconds remaining proved to be the difference as the Arkansas State Red
Wolves captured a thrilling 73-70 win over St. Bonaventure in non-conference
play at the ASU Convocation Center.
Townsel finished the day with nine points, hitting on 3-of-9 shots behind the
three-point line for Arkansas State (5-3). Brandon Peterson produced a double-
double with 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Matching Peterson in the
scoring department was Raeford Worsham, while Rakeem Dickerson chipped in 12
points before fouling out as the team snapped a two-game slide.
The Bonnies (5-3) were paced by Chris Johnson who tallied a game-high 19
points, Matthew Wright followed with 13 and Charlon Kloof contributed 10
points as the team had a two-game win streak halted. Demitrius Conger, who
shot only 2-of-11 from the floor and missed all six of his 3-point attempts,
accounted for a team-best 12 rebounds.
The Bonnies came out flat in the first half, shooting only 27.6 percent from
the field, including 1-of-11 beyond the arc, en route to a 42-28 deficit at
the break. ASU made good on an impressive 59.3 percent from the floor through
the first 20 minutes.
In the second half it was St. Bonaventure that had the hot hand, knocking down
57.1 percent from the floor in order to storm back and take a four-point lead
with less than four minutes remaining. The Bonnies owned a 70-68 advantage
with under a minute left, but a layup by Chris Johnson knotted the score at
70-70, setting the stage for the game-winner by Townsel.
In a game that featured five ties and six lead changes, the Bonnies shot only
6-of-24 beyond the arc and were outscored at the free-throw line, 20-16.
