Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - Jordan McRae led four players in double
figures for the Tennessee Volunteers, who knocked off the Western Carolina
Catamounts, 66-52, in non-league action at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Jarnell Stokes and Josh Richardson each added 12 points for Tennessee (7-3)
and Trae Golden chipped in 10 points. Kenny Hall ripped down a game-high 13
rebounds and was a point shy of a double-double. The Volunteers have now won
three straight.
Trey Sumler scored a game-high 23 points and Brandon Boggs added 15 points
off the bench for Western Carolina (4-8) which has lost four of its last five.
In a low scoring first half, Tennessee led 22-18 despite hitting just 3-of-21
field goal attempts by outscoring the Catamounts 16-4 from the free throw
line. Western Carolina managed to hit just 7-of-26 shots including misses on
all five shots from beyond the arc.
The Volunteers heated up to 53.8 percent shooting in the second half and again
outscored the Catamounts from the free throw line (14-4).
Tennessee had a 45-30 advantage on the boards and outscored Western Carolina
17-2 on second chance points.
