Logan, UT (Sports Network) - Preston Medlin finished with 25 points and five
assists as the Utah State Aggies held off the San Jose State Spartans to earn
a 66-60 decision in a Western Athletic Conference bout at the Dee Glen Smith
Spectrum.
Medlin went 6-of-12 from the field and made all 11 of his free throws while
leading Utah State (14-1, 5-0 WAC) to its 13th consecutive victory. Spencer
Butterfield added 13 points, Kyisean Reed chipped in 10, and Jarred Shaw
notched a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
D.J. Brown led San Jose State (9-7, 3-2) by netting 16 points, but he went 5-
of-14 from the floor. Chris Cunningham contributed 15 points, eight boards,
and four assists while Xavier Jones scored 14 points. Alex Brown pulled down a
team-best nine rebounds as the Spartans saw their brief two-game winning
streak come to its conclusion.
The Aggies took a narrow 29-27 lead into the intermission after they shot 46.2
percent from the floor in the first half. San Jose State stayed within
striking distance despite making only 35.3 percent of its field goal attempts
in the opening 20 minutes.
The Spartans never allowed the game to get out of hand, but Utah State stayed
in front for the entirety of the second half by converting 17-of-21 at the
charity stripe.
Despite the loss, San Jose State committed only six turnovers to Utah State's
14 and outscored the Aggies, 32-22, in the paint.
