Amherst, MA (Sports Network) - Chaz Williams scored a game-high 18 points as
the Massachusetts Minutemen recorded a 70-65 win over the Richmond Spiders
in an Atlantic 10 Conference tilt at the Mullins Center.
Williams added six rebounds, five assists and three steals in order to offset
his seven turnovers as the Minutemen (13-5, 3-2 A-10) recorded a third win in
four games. Cady Lalanne and Sampson Carter chipped in with 12 and 10 points,
respectively.
The Spiders (13-8, 3-3) were led by Wayne Sparrow who came away with 13 points
off the bench, followed by Cedrick Lindsay with 12 and Greg Robbins 10 points
as the team had a two-game win streak snapped.
UMass scored the first points of the game and led for the entire first half,
eventually taking a 34-29 advantage into the break thanks to 55.0 percent
shooting from the field.
In the second half Richmond bounced back and actually held a 63-56 edge with
just over six minutes remaining. But again the Minutemen shot the ball well
from the floor overall at 50.0 percent, using a 14-2 run to close out the
meeting and grab the five-point victory.
UMass survived despite shooting only 3-of-15 beyond the arc on the day.
