Huntington, WV (Sports Network) - Elijah Pittman supplied 20 points for the
Marshall Thundering Herd to help them defeat the UCF Knights, 75-71, in a
Conference USA matchup at the Cam Henderson Center.
Pittman was 7-of-12 from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers for the
Herd (10-12, 3-4 C-USA), who ended a three-game losing streak. D.D. Scarver
(16 points), Dennis Tinnon (13 points, five rebounds), and Nigel Spikes (11
points) added double-figure scoring performances while Spikes blocked a
career-high nine shots and DeAndrea Kane dished out 12 assists.
Keith Clanton led all scorers with 24 points and nine rebounds for the Knights
(15-6, 5-2), who saw their four-game winning streak come to a close. Calvin
Newell added 19 points and Isaiah Sykes contributed 10 while both players
managed to swipe three steals each.
Despite shooting 36.1 percent from the field, UCF led 33-32 at the break after
pulling down 14 offensive rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
The Herd battled back after the break. The hosts shot 59.1 percent from the
floor and outscored the Knights, 43-38, in the second half. A 14-6 run late in
the period put Marshall up by eight points with 17 seconds and the team was
able to hold off for the win.
Although the Knights earned a 41-29 rebounding edge, they allowed Marshall to
shoot 51.9 percent from the field in the contest.
