Northridge, CA (Sports Network) - James Ennis tallied 21 points and 10
rebounds as the Long Beach State 49ers used a second-half comeback to take
down the Cal State Northridge Matadors, 83-80, in a Big West Conference
showdown at The Matadome.
Mike Caffey scored 22 points and dished out five assists for LBSU (14-9, 10-2
Big West), which bounced back from a Thursday night loss at Hawaii. Peter
Pappageorge shot 5-of-10 from 3-point range for 15 points off the bench, while
Dan Jennings added 11 points and seven boards for the visitors.
For CSUN (13-12, 4-9), Stephen Maxwell recorded 20 points and eight rebounds,
and Josh Greene netted 12 points. Trevone Williams (12 points, seven rebounds)
Donovan Johnson (11 points), and Landon Drew (10 points, five assists) all had
strong efforts off the bench for the Matadors, who had won their previous
three contests.
CSUN shot just 39.4 percent from the field in the first half, but LBSU was
even worse at 35.7 percent. The Matadors closed out the frame on a 13-0 run to
go into intermission with a 39-28 lead.
The 49ers came out firing in the second half, ripping off a 14-2 spurt to take
a 42-41 advantage with 17:09 to play. The teams exchanged several leads down
the stretch, and with the game tied 75-75 with under a minute remaining,
Caffey drilled what proved to be the game-winning 3-pointer for LBSU, and it
went 5-of-6 from the foul line the rest of the way to hold on.
LBSU shot 13-of-29 from 3-point range, while CSUN was only 6-of-22 from beyond
the arc.
