Norfolk, VA (Sports Network) - Marcus Thornton buried 7-of-13 3-pointers en
route to a game-high 32 points, as the William & Mary Tribe defeated the Old
Dominion Monarchs, 74-62, in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup at the
Constant Center.
Thornton also converted 11-of-12 free throws, while Brandon Britt chipped in
with 18 points for the Tribe (11-14, 5-9 CAA).
Aaron Bacote had 20 points to lead the Monarchs (3-23, 1-13), who lost for the
13th time in their last 14 outings. DeShawn Painter recorded a double-double
with 16 points and 10 rebounds, although he committed seven of ODU's 15
turnovers for the game. Dimitri Batten rounded out the double-figure scorers
with 12 points off the bench.
The Tribe jumped out to a 12-point lead on a 3-pointer by Julian Boatner at
the 7:25 mark of the first half, capping a 16-4 spurt. However, ODU answered
right back with a 15-4 run, and the half eventually ended with W&M leading,
39-34.
After shooting 56.5 percent from the floor in the opening frame, the Tribe
cooled off in the second stanza and shot just 35.7 percent. Still, they were
able to put together a late 9-2 run to turn a 63-58 lead into a 72-60 cushion
with less than a minute to play.
Although the Monarchs shot a healthy 50 percent from the floor for the game,
they were 0-of-7 from the foul line while W&M made 18-of-22 free throws. In
addition, Thornton outscored the whole ODU team from beyond the arc (6-of-22)
in nine fewer attempts.
