Grand Forks, SD (Sports Network) - Led by 24 points from Gabe Rogers, the
Northern Arizona Lumberjacks edged North Dakota in overtime, 74-72, in a Big
Sky Conference bout at the Sioux Center.
DeWayne Russell added 21 points for the Lumberjacks (10-16, 7-9 Big Sky),
while Blake Hamilton chipped in with 11 points.
For UND (11-14, 8-8), Aaron Anderson led the way with 24 points, Troy Huff
posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Mitch Wilmer
finished with 12 points.
Both teams struggled in the first half, shooting under 40 percent from the
field. UND used a 7-1 scoring advantage at the free-throw line to take a 31-30
lead at the break.
After intermission, the teams improved their shooting. The Lumberjacks shot
45.8 percent from the field but missed all but one of their six 3-point tries.
UND made 47.6 percent of its field goal attempts, including 2-of-6 from beyond
the arc. After the teams traded leads for the entire half, NAU was down two
with 11 seconds left when Russell converted a layup to knot the score at
63-63. Huff's 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the game
to overtime.
In the extra session, the teams exchanged leads early before the Lumberjacks
scored six straight points, four coming from the free-throw line, to take the
lead for good and escape with the victory.
The Lumberjacks forced 21 UND turnovers. The game consisted of 11 ties and 20
lead changes.
