FORT MYERS, Fla. - It's been quite a ride for Minnesota Twins pitcher Glen Perkins, who is opening the season as the team's closer.

Just a few years ago, the Stillwater native was in Rochester, a castoff in the organization.

Over the years, he pitched in relief and started games, but it's fair to say ending games has been a good fit for him and the team.

"I love knowing that there is chance I am going to pitch and that if I do well we're going to win," said Perkins.

Perkins is one of the few constants in the Twins' pitching staff this season. He finished last year with 16 saves, 12 of which came in the second half of the season when he cemented his role.

"I like the pressure at the end of the game knowing that the team is relying on me," Perkins said.

Perkins finished 2012 with a 2.56 ERA. He had 78 strikeouts in 70.1 innings of work.
