Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Ryley Beaumont recorded a double-double with
14 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Elon Phoenix over the Samford Bulldogs,
63-62, in a Southern Conference clash at the Pete Hanna Center.
Beaumont shot 7-of-13 from the floor for Elon (19-8, 12-3 SoCon), which has
won four in a row. Jack Isenbarger led the Phoenix in scoring with 15 points,
knocking down a trio of 3-pointers. Tanner Samson also hit three 3-pointers
and contributed 11 points.
Samford (10-18, 8-7) was led by a 24-point performance from Clide Geffrard Jr.
who made good on 6-of-8 3-point attempts. Raijon Kelly added a double-double
with 17 points and 11 assists, while Tim Williams had 16 points and eight
rebounds. The Bulldogs saw a brief two-game win streak come to an end.
Elon led 38-30 at intermission after shooting a stellar 66.7 percent
from the floor in the first half. The hosts also shot the ball well through
the first 20 minutes of the contest, hitting at a 50-percent clip.
In the second half the Phoenix's hot shooting dropped to 38.5 percent as they
were outscored 32-25. With 26 seconds left Kelly hit a jumper to
put Samford up by one but Beaumont made a layup with eight seconds remaining
to put Elon back on top, 63-62. Kelly was able to get off a shot before the
buzzer for the Bulldogs but it missed the mark.
While Elon's bench contributed just 14 points, Samford's bench was even less
productive and combined for only three total points. The Bulldogs also hurt
themselves with a mere 7-of-14 showing at the free-throw line.
