Terre Haute, IN (Sports Network) - Dawon Cummings' layup with four seconds
remaining lifted the Indiana State Sycamores to a thrilling 65-64 win over the
Iona Gaels in a BracketBuster matchup at the Hulman Center.
R.J. Mahurin paced Indiana State (17-11) with 16 points, while Cummings
finished with 13 to help the Sycamores snap a three-game slide. Manny Arop
recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Jake Odum tallied
10 points and seven assists in the victory.
Lamont Jones led the Gaels (15-13) with a game-high 26 points and five steals.
Taaj Ridley added 16 points, and David Laury scored nine to go along with 11
rebounds.
The first half featured four ties, three lead changes, and not a whole lot of
scoring. Indiana State claimed a 30-22 halftime lead after holding Iona to 7-
of-30 shooting (.233) from the floor.
Early in the second stanza, the Sycamores stretched their lead to 10, their
largest of the game. However, Iona was able to hang around thanks to a 52-
percent shooting effort from the floor over the final 20 minutes. Late in the
contest, Iona's Sean Armand was fouled with nine seconds remaining and made
both free throws to give the Gaels a 64-63 lead. However, Odum found Cummings
on the other end for the game-winning bucket with four ticks on the clock.
Indiana State shot 7-of-20 from the perimeter, compared to 2-of-16 accuracy
for the Gaels. The Sycamores had 18 assists on 25 field goals for the game.
