HAYWARD, Wis. - Sergio Bonaldi won the 40th American Birkebeiner for the men and Caitlin Gregg of Minneapolis won the women's race.
Organizers originally thought Bonaldi's countryman Fabio Santus was first Saturday but a photo review determined Bonaldi won.
The Italian men swept the top four positions in the 50-kilometer race from Cable to Hayward.
The Duluth News Tribune reports Gregg also had a close finish. Tatjana Mannima of Estonia was four-tenths of a second behind.
Gregg won in 2011 and finished a close second last year.
For the first time, the women's elite skiers started 20 minutes ahead of the men. Gregg and Bonaldi finished within two minutes of each other.
The Birkie is billed as North America's largest Nordic ski race. Skiers from 21 countries and 48 states were expected.
