Santa Barbara, CA (Sports Network) - Konner Veteto connected on the game-
winning layup with five seconds remaining to cap off a 12-point second-half
comeback by the Sacramento State Hornets, as they knocked off the UC Santa
Barbara Gauchos, 51-50, in BracketBusters action at The Thunderdome.
Veteto finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for Sacramento State
(13-12), which halted a two-game losing slide. Dylan Garrity and John Dickson
each netted 12 points for the visitors, while Mikh McKinney also poured in 11
points.
For UCSB (8-18), which has lost three straight and eight of nine, Taran Brown
led all scorers with 18 points. Alan Williams shot just 3-of-14 from the floor
for eight points but managed 11 rebounds and five blocks, while T.J. Taylor
tallied nine points and six assists.
UCSB shot a mere 38.5 percent from the floor in the first half, but it held
Sacramento State to a woeful 5-of-25 from the field (.200) as it took a 29-21
lead into intermission.
The Gauchos continued to lead early in the second half and held a 40-28
advantage with 12:20 remaining before the Hornets came storming back.
Sacramento State took a 47-45 lead with 1:34 left on a Dickson 3-pointer.
After the teams traded field goals, UCSB regained the advantage, 50-49, on a
Brown 3-pointer with 17 seconds to go, but the Hornets answered with Veteto's
game-winner on the ensuing possession. Michael Bryson attempted a 3-pointer at
the buzzer for the Gauchos but it did not fall.
Sacramento State held a slight scoring advantage at the foul line, 12-9.
