Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Terrell Vinson paced all scorers with 20
points as the Massachusetts Minutemen notched an impressive road victory over
the Xavier Musketeers, 77-72, in Atlantic 10 Conference action at the Cintas
Center.
Freddie Riley netted 18 points on 6-of-10 from 3-point range for UMass (18-9,
8-6 A-10), which has won back-to-back games on the heels of a three-game
losing streak. Trey Davis chipped in 12 points and six assists off the bench.
Xavier (16-12, 8-6) had four players in double figures on the afternoon, led
by Semaj Christon with 17 points to go along with six assists. Isaiah Philmore
scored 14 points, Travis Taylor logged 10 points and eight rebounds, while
Brad Redford registered 13 points off the bench for the Musketeers, who lost
their second straight conference home game after winning an incredible 52 of
their previous 53 at the Cintas Center against A-10 opponents.
Xavier led by as many as nine in the first half but went into intermission
with just a one-point lead, 35-34. It shot only 35.5 percent from the field in
the opening stanza, but it made 11-of-18 from the foul line.
UMass snapped a 53-53 tie with an 8-1 run midway through the second half. The
Musketeers brought their deficit to three following a Jeff Robinson jumper
with under four minutes to play, but they would get no closer down the
stretch.
Xavier was far from impressive from the line (19-of-29), but UMass was even
worse at 10-of-20.
