Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Akil Mitchell posted a double-double
with 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Virginia Cavaliers rallied for a 61-58
win in overtime against the Maryland Terrapins during an Atlantic Coast
Conference regular season finale at John Paul Jones Arena.
Joe Harris added 15 points and Mike Tobey notched 13 for Virginia (21-10,
11-7 ACC) which ended a two-game slide with the victory.
Dez Wells had 12 points to match 12 rebounds, Nick Faust dropped in 15 points
and Alex Len tallied 10 points for Maryland (20-10, 8-10) which lost three of
its final four games to end the regular season.
Maryland held Virginia to just eight field goals on 33.3 percent shooting in
the first half to take a 32-19 edge at the break. The Terps shot 41.4 percent
itself and nailed four shots from long range.
After the break the Cavaliers stormed back by shooting 40 percent from the
field while limiting the Terps to just seven field goals and 25.9 percent
shooting. Tobey's layup with five seconds left knotted the game at 54-54 and
sent it to overtime.
The teams were tied, 58-58, with under two minutes left in the extra session
before Tobey tipped in a miss from Mitchell. The Terps had two missed
3-pointers and a pair of turnovers in the last two minutes to allow the
Cavaliers to survive.
