Laramie, WY (Sports Network) - Nathan Sobey knocked down a 3-pointer at the
buzzer as the Wyoming Cowboys slipped by the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 67-66,
in first-round action of the College Basketball Invitational at Arena
Auditorium.
Sobey finished with 12 points off the bench for the Cowboys (20-13) as they
picked up their 23rd consecutive win over a non-conference foe at Arena
Auditorium. Leading the way on offense for the hosts were Derrious Gilmore and
Larry Nance Jr. with 25 and 20 points, respectively, the latter clearing seven
rebounds.
The Mountain Hawks (21-10) were paced by Gabe Knutson who tallied 23 points,
followed by Anthony D'Orazio with 14 in the setback.
Less than six minutes into the meeting the Cowboys owned a 17-7 advantage, but
the team still fell behind by a point at the break, 36-35, even after shooting
61.9 percent from the field and an impressive 8-of-10 behind the 3-point line
through the first 20 minutes of action.
Despite knocking down only 1-of-7 beyond the arc in the second half, Lehigh
found itself with a seven-point advantage with just under six minutes
remaining. However, the Pokes closed on a 10-2 run and celebrated following
the game-winner by Sobey.
Wyoming ended up shooting better from long distance (11-of-19) than at the
free-throw line (6-of-11) on the night.
The Cowboys now await the winner of the North Dakota State/Western Michigan
matchup for the next outing on Monday night in the quarterfinals of the
tourney.
