Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Louisville guard Kevin Ware remained in an Indianapolis hospital Monday morning after undergoing surgery to repair a broken right leg.

Ware suffered a gruesome compound fracture after he landed awkwardly while trying to block a shot in the first half of Louisville's eventual 85-63 win over Duke. He was taken from the court on a stretcher and to Methodist Hospital.

A two-hour procedure on Sunday night included the insertion of a rod to stabilize the bone, which had punctured the skin. The bone was re-set and the wound was closed.

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino stayed in Indianapolis on Sunday night to be with Ware, who is expected to remain hospitalized until Tuesday.

A timetable has not been set for his return to competition, but the school is hopeful Ware will be able to travel to Atlanta for the Final Four next weekend.

Ware entered Sunday's Midwest Regional final averaging 4.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 16.7 minutes per game, but was coming off a career-high 11-point performance in Friday's 77-69 win over Oregon in the Sweet 16.
