MINNEAPOLIS - Demolition of the Metrodome isn't expected to begin until early 2014, but fans are already requesting scrap materials from the stadium.
The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, which operates the dome, says it has received more than 50 requests for things like seats, signs and turf.
"We haven't made any decisions, and we're just keeping track of all the requests," says MSFA chairwoman Michele Kelm-Helgen.
Among the requests, the community of Perham is asking for rows of seats to create a VIP section at its own ballpark. The Chanhassen Athletic Association has requested the baseball turf and dugouts.
Individuals are also requesting seats.
"Everyone seems to want one special seat where someone proposed to them or they had their first date," says Kelm-Helgen.
The MSFA is still working on a formal process for scrapping the Metrodome and is considering hiring an outside salvage company to help.
Whatever is decided, the MSFA says it cannot impact the construction timetable.
"Our construction firm, they will be the ones telling us 'OK, here's your window. This is how much time you have,'" says Kelm-Helgen. "As you can well imagine, just dissembling some of this could take quite a bit of time."
