EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- It wasn't your typical Monday at Winter Park, as Minnesota Vikings beat writers scrambled for quotes about the newest member of the team.

Not many people were asking about the team's 1-3 record. Instead, they wanted to know about Josh Freeman, the man who just might end up steering the Vikings ship for the bulk of the rest of the season.

"Big guy with a big arm," linebacker Chad Greenway told reporters, who then pressed him for more on what's next. "Obviously it is what it is. We're adding a new player to our team. Don't know any of the ins and outs or the shake up or what's going to happen."

The Vikings weren't too keen on talking in terms of the future. Coach Leslie Frazier did say that Christian Ponder or Matt Cassel would be the starter on Sunday, but several beat writers say the writing is on the wall.

"I didn't think they'd be willing to say the Ponder era is over so soon, and they didn't say that (Monday), but I think that most people (by looking at this move), that's basically what they're saying, that you don't have confidence that this is your guy," Star Tribune writer Chip Scoggins explained.

So why was Freeman available? There have been some widely publicized questions about his attitude and professionalism recently, but few dispute his quarterback credentials. He's a former Pro Bowl player who has put up big numbers in the past.

And as Scoggins points out, he chose Minnesota among a number of teams vying for his services.

"He's not coming in here to sit the bench. He's not coming in here to be a backup. He chose this situation, I would assume, because he feels like this is a place he could come and start," Scoggins said, before guessing that the new Viking could lead the offense in New York a week from Sunday.

Scoggins wonders if Freeman will hold on to the reins through the end of the season as kind of a tryout to see if he could be the long-term answer at quarterback.

Many Vikings fans are wondering the same thing.
