Nacogdoches, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Stephen F. Austin State University
athletic department has called a news conference for 5 p.m. ET today and
reportedly will announce J.C. Harper will be replaced as head football coach.
Coachingsearch.com and Footballscoop.com both reported Harper was out as head
SFA finished with a 3-9 record this year, sharing the Southland Conference
basement with Nicholls with a 1-6 mark.
Harper has a 37-45 record in seven seasons. SFA went 0-11 in his first season
in 2007, but the Lumberjacks turned their program around to win Southland
championships in 2009 and 2010. Both squads qualified for the FCS playoffs.
In '09, Harper was named the Southland coach of the year and finished second
the Eddie Robinson Award voting for FCS coach of the year.
Harper spent two seasons as SFA's defensive coordinator before becoming its
head coach. He has built some of the more explosive offenses in the nation
despite spending much of his career on the defensive side of the ball.
Lumberjacks quarterback Jeremy Moses won the 2010 Walter Payton Award as the
outstanding player in the FCS.
