ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Grant Besse scored five goals - including three short-handed - to lead Benilde-St. Margaret's past Hill-Murray 5-1 in the Class 2A state boys hockey championship.
Justin Quale made 24 saves Saturday as the Red Knights (25-6-0) won their first big school title. The school won Class 1A titles in 1999 and 2001.
Besse scored less than two minutes apart in the first period, added a short-handed tally late in the second and two more with a man down in the third for the Red Knights. The team has rallied around a fallen teammate much of the season.
On Dec. 30, sophomore Jack Jablonski suffered a severe spinal cord injury from a hit into the boards during a junior varsity game and is not expected to walk again. Jablonski watched from his wheelchair in a suite Saturday.
Zach LaValle scored a third-period goal for Hill-Murray (24-7-0).
