MINNEAPOLIS - After reports that the Twins put catcher Joe Mauer on the MLB waiver wire, there was a bit of panic and confusion that rolled through the Twin Cities.

Mauer is a hometown hero who isn't anywhere close to halfway through his lucrative eight year contract.

We went to Star Tribune Twins Beat Writer La Velle E Neal III to find out what's going on.

"In August, mostly every player in Major League Baseball is placed on waivers; Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, all those guys for the most part end up on waivers at one time or another.  It's a matter of procedure for teams to do that just to keep their options open," Neal explained.

A lot of baseball writers across the country started to wonder what the Twins' intentions were, especially after a mega-trade between the Boston Red Sox and LA Dodgers recently.

Neal says the Twins aren't wavering on Mauer, who seems to be having a pretty good season.

"There are no indications whatsoever that the Twins are considering moving this guy.  They've got too much money invested in this hometown hero and I think they plan on keeping him for the long haul here, but as soon as you mention Joe Mauer and waivers, it's going to get a response from the community," Neal concluded.
