San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez worked seven shutout innings as the San Diego Padres downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Petco Park.

Volquez (11-11) allowed six hits and struck out four to pick up his fourth win in six starts. It is Volquez's highest season win total since he won 17 games with the Cincinnati Reds in 2008.

Houston Street allowed one run in the ninth, but stranded two runners to notch his 23rd save of the season.

Yasmani Grandal drove in a run for the Padres, who have won two in a row.

Josh Beckett (1-3) was tagged for two runs -- one earned -- on five hits while fanning seven in the loss.

Luis Cruz went 3-for-4 and A.J. Ellis drove in the only run for the Dodgers, who trail the St. Louis Cardinals by 4 1/2 games for the final NL wild card spot.
