Tulsa, OK (Sports Network) - Ja'Terian Douglas and Alex Singleton combined for
224 yards rushing to lead the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to a 33-11 win over the
Texas-El Paso Miners in a Conference USA bout at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
Douglas finished with 128 yards and a touchdown and Singleton had 96 yards and
two touchdowns for Tulsa (6-1, 4-0 C-USA) which has won six straight. Cody
Green completed 13-of-22 passes for 198 yards. Thomas Roberson led in
receiving with three catches for 62 yards.
Texas-El Paso (1-6, 0-3) got 119 yards on 11-for-19 passing from Nick Lamaison
before he came off after injuring his hamstring in the third quarter. Carson
Meger took over and completed 16-of-23 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown
but also had two costly turnovers. It didn't matter who was throwing to Jordan
Leslie, who caught 10 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown. The Miners have
lost four straight.
After a 12-play, 67-yard drive stalled out on Tulsa's first drive, the Golden
Hurricane settled for a 31-yard field goal from Daniel Schwarz to take a 3-0
UTEP also had a drive end with a field goal when Steven Valadez connected on a
19-yard attempt that capped off an 11-play, 80-yard drive and evened the score
Yet another long drive by Tulsa failed to result in a touchdown when Schwarz
nailed a 25-yard field goal to finish off a 19-play, 76-yard drive that took
7:35 off the clock.
Tulsa finally found the end zone on its first drive of the second half when
Singleton scored on a one-yard run.
The Miners failed to capitalize on an 11-play, 82-yard drive when Meger was
intercepted in the end zone on 4th-and-goal from the three-yard line.
The turnover setup an 81-yard touchdown run by Douglas. After a failed extra
point attempt the Golden Hurricane led 19-3.
Meger turned the ball over again, this time fumbling the ball which was then
scooped up and returned 17 yards for a touchdown by Tulsa's Shawn Jackson.
After the return Tulsa's lead ballooned to 26-3.
A 61-yard touchdown pass from Meger to Leslie put an end to the Tulsa scoring
run. After a successful two-point conversion the Miners trailed 26-11.
Singleton ran into the end zone from 10 yards out on Tulsa's next possession
to secure the win.
Tulsa out gained UTEP on the ground by a 281-31 margin. The Miners were just
3-for-14 on third down and 1-for-3 in the red zone.
