San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy
has named Barry Zito his Game 1 World Series starter.
With the Giants trailing 3-1 in the NLCS, Zito went out and pitched 7 2/3
shutout innings against the Cardinals en route to a 5-0 victory to keep San
Francisco's season alive.
A 6-1 win in Game 6 followed by a convincing 9-0 victory on Monday put the
Giants in the Fall Classic for the second time in three years.
They will face the AL-champion Detroit Tigers starting on Wednesday. Reigning
AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander will pitch Game 1 opposite
Zito.
Zito has never pitched in the World Series. The left-hander was kept of the
Giants' postseason roster in 2010 for his poor performance during the regular
season.
