Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - Erick Green scored 24 points to lead the
Virginia Tech Hokies to a 95-79 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes at Cassell Coliseum
as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Robert Brown added 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor for Virginia
Tech (6-0) while Jarell Eddie and C.J. Barksdale both finished with 11 points
and seven rebounds. Joey van Zegeren provided a spark off the bench with 10
points in 12 minutes.
Aaron White paced Iowa (5-2) with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Roy Devyn Marble
contributed 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in the Hawkeyes'
second straight loss.
The contest went back and forth for much of the first half. Virginia Tech was
trailing 37-36 with 3:16 left before the break, but it closed the period on a
10-1 run to take a 46-38 lead into halftime. Both sides went 15-of-30 from the
floor in the opening 20 minutes, but Virginia Tech outscored the visitors 13-5
at the foul line to go into the intermission on top.
The Hokies continued their momentum and scored the first nine points of the
second half to build a 17-point lead with just under 17 minutes left to play.
Iowa battled back to make it a three-point deficit, but Virginia Tech caught
fire again to push its advantage back up to a double-digit margin. The Hokies
made 16-of-24 attempts from inside the three-point line after halftime to run
off to the 16-point decision.
Virginia Tech converted 27-of-30 attempts the free throw line in the contest
while Iowa went 13-of-18 at the charity stripe.
