DeKalb, IL (Sports Network) - Hayden Humes poured in a game-high 18 points to
lead the Illinois-Chicago Flames to a 58-46 decision over the Northern
Illinois Huskies in a non-conference tilt at the NIU Convocation Center.
Daniel Barnes contributed 11 points and eight rebounds for UIC (5-1), which
has now won four games in a row. Josh Crittle and Gary Talton added 10 points
and five assists each for the Flames.
The Huskies (1-4) struggled as their starting five shot a combined 5-of-23
from the floor in the contest. Sam Mader scored 15 points in 21 minutes off
the bench to pace NIU, which remains winless versus Division I competition.
The Flames forced NIU into eight turnovers, which they turned into 10 points
to build a 27-19 halftime lead. The Huskies managed to make only eight of
their 26 field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes.
NIU continued to struggle after the break as it shot 34.8 percent from the
field and made only 8-of-16 attempts at the charity stripe in the second half.
UIC sunk 13 free throws and 44.4 percent of its field goal attempts in the
final 20 minutes to walk away with the 12-point win.
Despite losing convincingly, NIU held a narrow 36-34 advantage in the
rebounding battle.
