ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Thomas Academy senior forward Matt Perry's hat-trick in the Minnesota boys Class-A state hockey title game helped propel the Cadets to their third consecutive state title Saturday afternoon at the Xcel Energy.
Perry tallied goals in each period in the title game and finished as the tournament's leading scorer with 10 points (seven goals, three assists). He finished with 14 shots and +9 in the tournament.
In the title game, Perry's first goal gave St. Thomas Academy an early lead after Hermantown goaltender Adam Smith lost his stick. His second and third goals of the title game brought the Cadets within one early in the second and final periods.
In St. Thomas' opening round tournament game, Perry tallied two goals on three shots to lift the Cadets past St. Cloud Apollo 12-0. The Cadets blanked East Grand Forks in the tournament's second round 11-0 victory, with Perry notching two more goals on seven shots.
