CHICAGO - With the eighth pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, the Buffalo Sabres selected Eden Prairie's Casey Mittelstadt.
Mittelstadt, a center and Minnesota's Mr. Hockey 2017, played for the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League. He will be attending classes at the University of Minnesota this fall.
Mittelstadt tallied 23 goals and 49 assists in 30 games this season.
"My family is super excited for me and and going to a great place like Buffalo makes draft night even better," Mittelstadt told reporters Friday night.
Mittelstadt may eventually be coached by another Minnesotan. Earlier this month, the Sabres hired Phil Housley, a native of South St. Paul.
Two other Minnesota hockey players were drafted Friday night. Ryan Poehling and Jake Oettinger, both of Lakeville North, were selected in the first round. Poehling, a center, was the 25th overall pick for the Montreal Canadiens. Poehling is committed to playing for St. Cloud State. Oettinger, a Lakeville North goalie, was selected 26th overall by the Dallas Stars.
