ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Minnesota Golden Gophers women's hockey team did something that no other women's hockey team has ever done -- go undefeated for an entire regular season.
"We want to get better and better each week," said Gophers coach Brad Frost. "This is sort of another notch in the belt so to speak."
A 3-0 win over St. Cloud State on Saturday clinched the Gophers undefeated season. Despite the perfect 34-0 record the Gophers aren't resting on their laurels.
"I think we can let it sink in for a day and then it's on to the playoffs," said Megan Bozek. "Then it's on to the next game and the next game is the biggest game of the year."
On Saturday, a pair of freshman got the Gophers on the board first in the second period. Lee Stecklein took a slap shot and Hannah Brandt tipped it in. It was the only goal of the second period.
In the third period, Becky Kortum scored a rebound goal to make put the Gophers up 2-0. Milica McMillen scored on a one-timer slap shot to earn a little insurance for the maroon and gold. Next up for the Gophers is the WCHA Tournament.
Both coaches and players are very aware that an unbeaten season doesn't mean much if you don't play your best hockey when tournament championships are on the line.
"If we don't perform well in the playoffs it's kind of a one-and-done deal," Bozek said. "So if we keep playing Gophers hockey for 60 minutes, I'm not worried about it."
"We're definitely looking forward to getting into the playoffs and having the playoffs really mean something," Frost said.
The first round of the WCHA Playoffs, a best-of-three series at campus sites of the top four seeds, will be held the weekend of Friday, March 1, Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3 (if necessary).
The winners of those first-round playoff series advance to the 2013 WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis March 8-9.
