MANKATO, Minn. - Freshman Dylan Margonari scored his first game-winning goal late in the third period as Minnesota State, Mankato beat Minnesota 5-3 Saturday in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game.
Margonari's second goal of the season broke a 3-3 tie with 3:41 left in the third period. The Mavericks (3-3-0, 1-3-0) added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds to seal the win.
MSUM took 35 shots on goal to just 28 by second-ranked Minnesota (5-2-0, 2-2-0). The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead after one period.
But the Golden Gophers tied is on a goal by Erik Haula late in the first and a power play by Nick Bjugstad.
After an exchange of goals, Margonari, playing on the fourth line, tool a feed and beat Minnesota goalie Adam Wilcox.
Minnesota beat the Mavericks 3-2 Friday in Minneapolis.
