LOS ANGELES - The slavery epic "12 Years a Slave" and the con-artist caper "American Hustle" lead the nominations for the 71st annual Golden Globes, but the proceedings will also have a decided Minnesota flavor.

A Somali actor from Minnesota who made his acting debut in the Tom Hanks' movie "Captain Phillips" has received a Golden Globes supporting actor nomination.

Barkhad Abdi and three other amateur Somali actors from Minnesota portray pirates who hijack an American cargo ship off the Horn of Africa in 2009 and take its captain, played by Hanks, hostage. Abdi is the pirates' ringleader.

The film also garnered three other Golden Globes nominations, including best drama, best actor for Hanks and best director for Paul Greengrass.

Minnesota native Jessica Lange is up for best actress in a mini-series or TV movie for her role in "American Horror Story: Coven."

While being snubbed for best picture and screenplay, Joel and Ethan Coen's "Inside Llewyn Davis" is up for best musical or comedy.

And in the animated category Minnesota native Tony Smeed played a significant role in making "Frozen," which is up for best animated feature.

The nominations announced Thursday morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association spread the nominations around, but the large haul for "American Hustle" and "12 Years a Slave" suggested the films may be this year's Oscar favorites.

Also in the mix are Alexander Payne's father-son road trip "Nebraska," with five nominations, including best actor for Bruce Dern. The space odyssey "Gravity" earned four nominations, as did the Somali pirate thriller "Captain Phillips."

This year's Golden Globes, to take place Jan. 12, will again be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who last year led the broadcast to a large ratings increase and a viewership of 19.7 million.

Abdi was also nominated for a SAG award on Wednesday. He was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.
