American Hustle showed some amazing moves and Gravity continued to soar as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science handed down nominations for the 86th Academy Awards on Thursday.

Both films lead the field with 10 nominations each.

12 Years a Slave was right behind with 9 nominations at the predawn ceremony in Beverly Hills, the start of the final leg of jockeying before the March 2 show hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.

Hustle, which earned a best-picture Golden Globe on Sunday, brought in a slew of acting nominations besides its best-picture nomination — this included best actor for Christian Bale, best supporting actor for Bradley Cooper, best actress with Amy Adams, and best supporting actress with Jennifer Lawrence.

Gravity earned a nomination for its leading actress Sandra Bullock along with best picture and best director for Alfonso Cuaron.

12 Years a Slave took a best-picture nomination, along with best director with Steve McQueen, best actor in Chiwetel Ejiofor, supporting actor Michael Fassbender and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o as supporting actress.

Of particular note in the field was the large number of best-picture nominations. With a minimum of five films and a maximum of 10 films possible in the widened field, Academy voters picked nine, including the surprise Philomena starring Judi Dench,Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska and Her. These films fit in with some of the season's heavy hitters including American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street.

There were high-profile snubs, as well. Robert Redford did not make the cut for his widely praised performance in All Is Lostand the late James Gandolfini did not receive a nomination for his touching performance in Enough Said.

The Oscar telecast, to be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will air on March 2 on ABC.
