GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - It's one of the most prestigious awards for creative teens. Previous winners include Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Stephen King and Lena Dunham.
It's theScholastic Art and Writing Awards and now you can add an 8th grader from Valley View Middle School in Edina to the list of recipients.
Harrison Heinks and his mom, Kari, visited KARE 11 Sunrise to talk about his sculpture that won the gold medal.
Harrison created his sculpture of a pair of shoes in about twenty minutes. He said it helps that his mother, who is an art teacher in the St. Michael - Albertville school district, has plenty of clay on hand.
Art is more than a hobby for Harrison. It's a way for him to deal with stress and the frustration that can make for a challenging day for a teenager who also has autism.
Kari says art is an outlet and a way for Harrison to share himself with the world.
The family is raising funds for the trip to New York where Harrison will receive his award on May 31st at Carnagie Hall.
