GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – Whether you do it for dieting purposes, or just to feel good, cleansing has become a fad in the fitness world.

Fitness expert Chris Freytag came by KARE 11 Sunrise to talk about foods that can help you do that naturally.

Beets

This brightly red root vegetable is a great source of betacyanin, which has cancer-fighting properties. Plus, it's full of magnesium, iron, zinc and calcium to help flush out toxins.

Basil

Who knew this herb was such a nutritional powerhouse? Basil has anti-bacterial properties, and it's full of antioxidants to protect the liver.

Ginger

One of my favorite flavors – easy to add to smoothies and recipes. It spikes your metabolism and flushes out waste. Plus, a recent Columbia University study found that eating more ginger just might keep your appetite in check.

Pineapple

This tropical delight contains bromelain, a digestive enzyme that helps cleanse your colon and improve digestion.

Avocados

Bring on the guacamole! Avocado does a great job of cleansing your colon, thanks to its bounty of insoluble and soluble fiber.

Cinnamon

Rev your metabolism with a dash of delicious cinnamon. It makes everything taste better, plus it's full of iron, calcium and manganese. The World's Healthiest Foods points out that manganese is great for helping your body process fatty acids and keep blood sugar levels stable. Called a natural diuretic.

Apples

Common everyday fruit but did you know that they're also a detox superstar? They're nutrient-rich, plus they contain pectin, a soluble fiber that helps remove food additives and metals from your system.

Parsley

Those pretty green leaves don't just make your plate look great. Parsley boasts plenty of beta-carotene and vitamins A, C and K to protect your kidneys and bladder.
