GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- Rebekah Mayer, National Training Manager, from Life Time Fitness stopped by KARE Saturday to talk about running tips, training, and gear.

If you are brand new to running, getting started can be daunting but it doesn't have to be. Mayer said to set a realistic goal. Goals help keep a person on track.

Life Time suggests using the SMART acronym to help runners clarify their goals:

  • Specific: Make your goal something concrete, like a certain race where you want to run a PR or a certain mileage you want to reach each week.
  • Measurable: Goals should have a number associated so you can determine if you were successful. Time goals are very common for runners, and body composition goals can be measured easily as well.
  • Attainable: Keep your goal realistic. You want a goal to be challenging yet something you can reach in the time you have available.
  • Relevant: Choose a goal that matters to you and gets you motivated to put in the work to get there.
  • Time-bound: A goal should have a deadline to keep you motivated. A short-term goal may be a few months away, while a long-term goal could be a "bucket list" item that you want to accomplish in a year or more. For a beginning runner, the short-term goal may be running their first 5k, while a long-term goal may be a 1/2 marathon or marathon.
