GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – A Minnesota-based organization is improving the health and well-being of street animals on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Mark Diekmann, Chairman of Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic, came by KARE Saturday to discuss how the organization is helping animals in need.

Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic is a non-profit that works to find homes for needy street dogs from the Dominican Republic. They work with Headwaters Animal Shelter in Park Rapids to assist with the adoption of these animals.

The organization provides emergency medical care to animals in distress. Preventive medicines are being provided to more than 1,500 animals every month. Spay and neuter clinics are now being held in the newly launched Rescue Rover mobile vet clinic, in an attempt to keep the animal population down.
