GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Did you know that about one-third of the populations has heartburn?

Brenna Thompson, a registered dietitian with Nutritional Weight and Wellness, stopped by KARE News @4 to discuss which foods are easy to digest vs. those that can lead to heartburn or acid reflux.

Brenna explained that heartburn, according to WebMD, is "an irritation of the esophagus that is caused by stomach acid. This can create a burning discomfort in the upper abdomen or below the breast bone."

People often reach for acid-blocking medication for temporary relief from heartburn; however, prolonged use of acid-blocking medication can lead to a B12 deficiency, depression, fatigue and even poor memory and osteoporosis. These drugs were not designed to be taken long term.

How do the food choices you make contribute to your heartburn or acid reflux? Brenna explained that foods such as steak and green beans, omelet and berries, deli turkey, veggies and guacamole and wine are all much easier to digest than pasta with tomato sauce, milk and cereal, a granola bar and a mocha or beer.

Brenna also shared that about 50 percent of older adults are diabetic or pre-diabetic, which means they have a sensitivity or problem with sugar and that they have insulin resistance. Eating foods high in sugar can cause heartburn for them.
