ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A jury has convicted a Roman Catholic priest of sexual misconduct involving a woman he was counseling at a St. Paul church.
Forty-six year old Christopher Thomas Wenthe, of Delano, was convicted Tuesday of third degree criminal sexual conduct.
According to the Ramsey County Attorney, Wenthe engaged in illegal sexual conduct with the victim in November or December of 2003. During that time, the female victim was seeking spiritual advice and counsel from Wenthe, who was working as a priest at Nativity Catholic Church in St. Paul.
"It is a sobering occasion when our office has to bring charges against a member of the clergy, but our obligation is to always protect victims and seek justice, without fear or favor," County Attorney John Choi said. "The defendant abused the trust that comes with his position and violated the law, and thus we believe the jury in this case reached a correct and just verdict."
Wenthe is scheduled for sentencing on December 14.
