WOODBURY, Minn. - Strengthened security policies and increased safety are in the works for a Woodbury hotel targeted for closure by a number of its neighbors.

Management from the Red Roof Inn met last week with Woodburycity officials and police to find a solution to a spate of problems that culminated in late August with a standoff and police-involved shooting.

Demetrius Santreel Ballinger, age 25,is charged with 27 seperate felony counts ranging from attempted murder and criminal sexual conduct involving a victim under the age of 13 to aggravated robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon.

In the wake of the incident neighbors said they were tired of the noise, violence and drug traffic they claimed was attracted by the Red Roof Inn, and started an online campaign to shut it down as a public nuisance.

Instead, hotel officialsmet with city officials to propose changes they say will make the business more secure, and holdguests more accountable for their behavior.

Among the proposed changes:

  • Security modificationsat the property
  • enhance check in procedures
  • guests will be instructed on their zero tolerance policy
  • Increased staff training

The City of Woodbury released a statement, the contents of which are listed below.

The meeting was highly cooperative and productive, and all shared a common goal: to ensure the safety and security of guests, employees and the general public at the Red Roof Inn.

The Red Roof will take specific actions to modify security at the property. Red Roof will enhance its check-in procedures, and all guests will be instructed of the hotel's zero tolerance policy for illegal and inappropriate behavior.

Additionally, the Woodbury Public Safety Department proposed to develop a guest services staff training program for hotel front desk personnel in Woodbury. Red Roof Inn agreed to be the first hotel to participate.

Red Roof will continue its long-standing cooperative relationship with local authorities and police. The City of Woodbury and Red Roof Inn have committed to an open and ongoing dialogue to ensure shared interests are met.
