GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - The "Fix-It and Forget-It" Pink Cookbook brings together two audiences: those who want to feed their families good food and those who want to support people with breast cancer and eradicate the disease.

Cookbook author Phyllis Pellman Good joined KARE 11 News @ 4 to sharethree of the more than 700 recipes in her latest book.

Besides slow cooker recipes, the book features survivor stories and tips to reduce your risk for breast cancer.

Also, for every book sold, $1.00 is given to the Avon Foundation for Women, whichsupports breast cancer awareness and treatment.

Helen's Lasagna

Makes 6-8 servings
Prep. Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 4-5 hours
Ideal slow-cooker size: 6-qt.

1 lb. ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
29-oz. can tomato sauce
1 cup water
6-oz. can tomato paste
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. dried oregano
8-oz. pkg. lasagna noodles, uncooked
4 cups (16 oz.) shredded mozzarella cheese
1½ cups (12 oz.) small-curd cottage cheese
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  1. Cook beef, onion, and garlic together in saucepan until browned. Drain.
  2. Stir in tomato sauce, water, tomato paste, salt, and oregano. Mix well.
  3. Spread one-fourth of meat sauce in ungreased slow cooker. Arrange one-third of noodles over sauce.
  4. Combine the cheeses. Spoon one-third of cheese mixture over noodles. Repeat layers twice. Top with remaining meat sauce.
  5. Cover. Cook on Low 4-5 hours.

Variation: (Dolores S. Kratz, Souderton, PA) For a fuller flavor, use 14-oz. can tomato sauce instead of 6-oz. can tomato paste and water. Add ½ tsp. garlic powder, 1 tsp. dried basil, and ¼ tsp. pepper.

Hot Fudge Cake

Makes 6-8 servings
Prep. Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 2-3 hours
Ideal slow-cooker size: 3½-qt.

1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup flour
3 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
½ cup milk
2 Tbsp. melted butter
½ tsp. vanilla
¾ cup packed brown sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1¾ cups boiling water

  1. Mix together 1 cup brown sugar, flour, 3 Tbsp. cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Stir in milk, butter, and vanilla. Spread over the bottom of slow cooker.
  3. Mix together ¾ cup brown sugar and ¼ cup cocoa. Sprinkle over mixture in slow cooker.
  4. Pour in boiling water. Do not stir.
  5. Cover and cook on High 2-3 hours, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Sesame Pork Ribs

Makes 6 servings
Prep. Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 5-6 hours
Ideal slow-cooker size: 5-qt.

1 medium onion, sliced
¾ cup packed brown sugar
¼ cup soy sauce
½ cup ketchup
¼ cup honey
2 Tbsp. cider, or white, vinegar
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp. ground ginger
¼-½ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
5 lbs. country-style pork ribs

  1. Place onions in bottom of slow cooker.
  2. Combine brown sugar, soy sauce, ketchup, honey, vinegar, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes in large bowl. Add ribs and turn to coat. Place on top of onions in slow cooker. Pour sauce over meat.
  3. Cover. Cook on Low 5-6 hours.
  4. Place ribs on serving platter. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve sauce on the side.
