EDINA, Minn. -- At metro grocery stores, it's a countdown to the countdown.
"We see last-minute shoppers," says Merrily Smith, general manager at Lunds in Edina. "People say they're not doing anything and then they decide we have to do something to ring in the new year."
December 31 is the third busiest grocery shopping day of the year. At Lunds, an Edina police officer directs traffic in the parking lot as streams of customers head inside in search of final items.
Smith says it's typically a mad-dash late in the day.
"We used to close at six, but people would be pounding on our doors. We're now open until midnight."
Shrimp, crab, pasta and chili remain New Year's Eve favorites according to Smith.
