CHASKA, Minn. - A district-wide lockdown in the Eastern Carver County Schools triggered by an as-yet unspecified threat has beenpartiallylifted as of 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Chaska High School first reported on its Twitter account that the schoolwas being placed in precautionary lockdown, buseswere being diverted and students arriving at school would be sent home until the situation is deemed safe.
Those already in the building were sent to classrooms where the doors were locked and the lights turned off.
Soon after Chaska High School was placed in lockdown, nearby Pioneer Ridge Middle School and Victoria Elementary also began lockdown procedures.
A statement was posted on the high school's website around 8:30 a.m. It reads:
Chaska High School administration received a threat this morning, we have taken it seriously an are now working with police. As a precaution the school is in lockdown for students and staff that were in the building. Buses have been diverted. Everyone is OK. Entrances are closed until we end the lockdown. Students and staff should wait at home or offsite until further notice. We will provide updates to families and students via schoola nd district websites and our social media: chs.district112.org @chaskahawks
Natalie Salden was one of many concerned parents who flocked to a parking lot near the high school after hearing about the situation. "Initially it was really scary when I got that text," Salden told KARE 11's Bryan Piatt. "I had to read it three times. A wave of nausea came over."
Salden said she just wanted to be there and give her freshman daughter a hug after what sounded like a frightening experience. "She was getting out of a student council meeting, she was there early this morning, and over the loudspeaker they said 'attention students and staff, we are going into lockdown, this is not a drill,I repeat, this is not a drill, find a classroom.'"
Salden's daughter and a number of other students ran into the band room and locked the doors, remaininginside for nearly two hours.
Because of the disruption caused by the emergency response, a decision was made to close Chaska High School for the remainder of the day. Internal lockdown measures will remain in place until noon at all other Eastern Carver County Public Schools.
