GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- Ted Chalupsky from the Right Staff joined KARE Saturday to give viewers some tips on keeping their resumes on the desk and out of the trash.

Here are some helpful tips for what job seekers can do to prevent their resumes from ending up in the waste basket.

  • Tip #1: Ask not what the company can do for you, ask what you can do for the company. Make sure to mention what you bring to the table. Be sure to make this clear in your cover letter and/or overview section.
  • Tip #2: Make it easy and clear for the hiring manager and/or human resource professional to find what they want to know first. With, sometimes, hundreds of resumes to go through make yours easy to decipher quickly and clearly.
  • Tip #3: Use key words. Be sure to use words that are specific to what you are applying for.
  • Tip #4: Proofread, proofread, and proofread! If you claim to have great attention to detail, but have typos in the same paragraph, your resume will end up in the trash. Ask a friend to look over it for you, or read it aloud to yourself to help catch anything you may have missed.
