Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - Anthony Myles led the way with 23 points as the Rider Broncs downed the Hartford Hawks, 63-54, in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at Chase Arena.
For the Broncs (19-14), Jonathon Thompson added 16 points and Daniel Stewart chipped in with 10 and a game-high eight rebounds.
Mark Nwakamma paced the Hawks (17-14) with 17 points, while Nate Sikma added 15, although the latter missed all seven of his 3-point attempts on the night.
Rider scored the final five points of the first half to take a 25-23 lead into intermission. The Broncs shot 43.5 percent from the field in the opening half, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Hartford shot only 36 percent over the first 20 minutes of action and just 2-of-11 from beyond the 3-point arc.
In the second half the Broncs got hot, connecting on 61.1 percent from the field, not to mention 13-of-16 at the free-throw line. The Hawks made 46.2 percent of their shots from the field but missed all six of their 3-point attempts after the break. Rider used a 6-0 run late in the period to turn a one-point deficit into a five-point lead, 53-48, with just under four minutes to play.
The Broncs, who move to the next round of the tourney against an opponent yet to be determined, survived 18 turnovers by holding Hartford to just 2-of-17 shooting on the perimeter.
