MAPLEWOOD, Minn. - The whine of an ice auger announced that St. Paul Police are back on Keller Lake in Maplewood Wednesday, searching for the body of Kira Trevino.

Authorities drilled more than four dozen holes in the frozen ice, openings that will allow cadaver dogs to pick up Trevino's scent if her body is trapped below the lake's surface.

St. Paul Police spokesman Sergeant Paul Paulos says that dogs hit on two of 49 holes bored in Keller Lake. Sonar cameras were dropped into both holes but nothing significant was spotted. Paulos said the decision was made not to send divers down, and operations began to wrap up around 2 p.m.

Police say gas from a decomposing body will not permeate thick ice, and by drilling a number of holes the search dogs will be able to pick up the scent if Kira is under the water.

Trevino's husband Jeff is being held in the Ramsey County jail, charged with her murder even though Kira's body has not been found.

Officers and dive crewshave been a regular presence out on Keller Lake and in the surrounding park after a tipster told police about seeing two men carrying something heavy rolled up in what looked like a rug trudging across the park.

In the days since investigators have recovereda pillowcase, bra, and other items with blood that matches Kira Trevino's type.
