MINNEAPOLIS - A special designer cupcake is extremely difficult for most folks to turn down.

A cupcake designed to benefit a sweet dog that has suffered at human hands is an even easier sell.

Customers lined up for the better part of a city block in south Minneapolis Friday, as they waited to buy cupcakes made by the crew at The Sweet Retreatas a fundraiser for Franco the pocketpit bull.

Franco has become a cause celebre of sorts after a Blaine convenience story clerk saw a bunch of teenagers kicking the dog around like a football. The clerk saved Franco, but he suffered injuries that required extensive vet care.

When Sweet Retreat owner Robin Johnson heard aboutFranco's situation it was a no-brainer. She decided to sell a special edition cupcake with a sugar picture of Franco on topall day Friday, with $1.50 from each cupcake going towards the dog's care.

Interest in the event spread like wildfire: 1,200 cupcakes were pre-ordered, and 500 made for retail business quickly flew out the door as well. The Sweet Retreat crew, more than half a dozen strong, jumped into action and started cranking out Franco cupcakes.

The highlight of the afternoon was when the folks at Secondhand Hounds brought Franco down to the shop in person. Everyone within arms reach gave him a nice scratch or a pat, and many received an enthusiastic puppy kiss in return.

Franco cupcakes will be available through 5 p.m. Friday.
