EDEN Prairie, Minn. - Mike Leddy, a longtime Minnesotahockey fan, has switched sides.
"Chicago is my favorite team now," chuckles Laddy.
Leddy officially switched sides in 2009, the day his son was traded from the hometown Minnesota Wild to the Chicago Blackhawks. Nick Leddy was a standout for Eden Prairie High School, spent time with the Golden Gophers, and then his Minnesota dream happened.
The standout defenseman was drafted by the hometown team, the Minnesota Wild selected him number one overall.
However, the love didn't last long: Leddy was quickly traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for Cam Barker, a defenseman who lasted just one mediocre season with the Wild.
"It wasn't his choice to be traded," says Nick's dad. "He was surprised and quickly realized this was a business."
Those who have helped Nick and followed his career havetraded loyaltiestoo.
"I like the Wild, but I'm cheering for Chicago," said Eden Prairie High School head coach Lee Smith. "It's so fun to watch him play. It's surreal at times."
Mike Leddy says the move to Chicago has been a "blessing in disguise" for his son.
"If you have to leave the State of Hockey, Chicago is a great hockey market," he says. "He has grown up fast, but remains humble. He is loving playoff hockey and is getting a lot of support playing in front of his hometown fans."
